The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54029 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials. Built to Series 2550 standards and conforming to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J specifications, this bit carries an M42 cobalt steel construction and a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating for extended tool life. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at startup and lowers the thrust force needed to penetrate hard stock. At 3.25 inches overall length with a 2.125-inch spiral flute, it suits standard jobber drilling tasks where reach and chip evacuation both matter. Licensed trades and industrial machinists reach for this bit when cutting stainless steel, alloy steel, and other high-strength ferrous materials.
The 54029 is built for production and maintenance drilling in stainless steel and carbon steel workpieces. Its straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard 3-jaw drill chucks on both handheld and bench-mounted equipment. The regular spiral flute geometry moves chips efficiently in deep-hole passes. It is a practical choice for plumbers, pipefitters, HVAC installers, and fabricators who regularly drill through stainless fastener plates, steel brackets, or heavy-gauge sheet metal where standard HSS bits lose their edge prematurely.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style jobber drill bit for use in any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.1660-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for primary use in stainless steel and steel workpieces per manufacturer specification.
Install in a calibrated 3-jaw chuck and verify the shank seats fully before applying torque. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat and prevent work-hardening at the bore. Run at the correct surface footage for cobalt tooling in the workpiece material — excessive speed without lubrication will shorten coating life. Inspect the cutting edges before reuse; cobalt bits can be resharpened by a qualified tool grinder when the split point shows wear.
