The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54024 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications where heat and wear resistance are critical. Built to M42 cobalt high-speed steel material grade standards, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows faster penetration with less thrust. The titanium nitride (TiN) coating extends tool life by increasing surface hardness and reducing friction. At 0.1820 inches in diameter (No. 14 wire size) with a 3-3/8 inch overall length, it fits standard drill chucks and handles common hole sizes in production and maintenance environments. This is a heavy-duty, high-performance tool built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards.
The 54024 is intended for drilling stainless steel, alloy steel, and other hard or abrasive metals where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. Its spiral flute geometry and web-thinned, tapered web construction promote efficient chip evacuation and reduce heat buildup at the cutting zone. Typical users include industrial maintenance technicians, pipefitters, tool-and-die workers, and experienced tradespeople working with ferrous metals in fabrication or field repair settings. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks without adapters.
Designed for use in standard three-jaw drill chucks accepting a 0.1820-inch straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and steel. Suitable for use in hand-held drills, drill presses, and CNC drilling equipment compatible with straight-shank jobber length bits in the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch diameter range. Series 2550.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck jaws before drilling and verify runout is minimal to avoid premature edge wear. Use cutting fluid or coolant rated for the workpiece material when drilling stainless steel to manage heat, even though this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Allow the split point to center the hole before applying full feed pressure. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed to maintain hole tolerance within the -0.0007 to 0.0000 inch diameter range.
