The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53930 is a jobber-length drill bit engineered for heavy-duty drilling in steel alloy and similar ferrous workpiece materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and heat resistance under sustained cutting loads. The bit measures 0.2280 inches in diameter (wire size No. 1) and features a 135-degree split point that starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking on hard surfaces. A parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation, making it well-suited for deeper holes and interrupted cuts. This is a right-hand cut bit with a straight-cylindrical shank and web-thinned, tapered web construction. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians.
The 53930 is a Series 150DHT bit designed for production and general-purpose drilling in steel alloy workpieces. It is commonly used in metal fabrication shops, maintenance and repair operations (MRO), and light manufacturing environments where consistent hole quality in ferrous materials is required. The 0.2280-inch diameter fits within the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch drill size range, and the straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks and collets without adapters.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber-length drill bit for standard drill chucks and collets accepting a 0.2280-inch straight-cylindrical shank, suitable for use in drill presses, hand drills, and CNC drilling applications.
Install into a properly sized drill chuck or collet, ensuring the shank is fully seated and the chuck key is removed before operation. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation and bit breakage. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable machine guarding requirements for the equipment in use. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating for wear before each use; a chipped or dull point will produce oversized holes and accelerated tool failure.
