The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53636 is a cobalt reduced shank twist drill bit designed for portable drilling operations in ferrous metals and hard alloys. The bit measures 9/16 inch (0.5625 inch) in diameter with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to run in standard 1/2 inch chucks even at this larger cutting diameter. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-1/8 inch flute length. The 118-degree split point geometry promotes self-centering and reduces walking on entry, which is critical when drilling cast iron, carbon steel, and alloy steel without a center punch. The Series 190C-TN cobalt construction provides heat resistance for demanding production or maintenance drilling tasks.
This bit is suited for general-purpose metal drilling in industrial maintenance, fabrication, and field service environments. Typical applications include drilling cast iron housings, structural steel, alloy steel fastener clearance holes, and similar hard ferrous workpieces. The reduced shank design extends usability to drill presses and portable electric drills equipped with standard 1/2 inch chucks, making it a practical choice for mechanics, pipefitters, ironworkers, and millwrights who regularly work with tough ferrous materials on portable or stationary equipment.
Compatible with portable electric drills and drill presses fitted with 1/2 inch capacity chucks. Rated for general-purpose drilling in cast iron, steel, alloy steel, and carbon steel workpieces per Series 190C-TN specifications.
This bit is installed and used by machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and general maintenance mechanics. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify the chuck key is removed before powering the drill. When drilling hard ferrous materials such as cast iron or alloy steel, use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant where the workpiece and setup allow to extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges and point for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point geometry is degraded.
