The CHICAGO-LATROBE 53462 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for general-purpose portable drilling in ferrous metals and hard alloys. The bit measures 31/32 inch (0.9688 inch decimal) in diameter with a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to run in standard 1/2-inch chucks even at a larger cutting diameter. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-1/8-inch flute length. The 118-degree split-point tip starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on flat stock. Two right-hand spiral flutes clear chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole work. Tool material is cobalt, which retains hardness at elevated cutting temperatures better than standard HSS, making it well suited for abrasive or tough base materials.
The 53462 is built for portable drilling applications where a full-shank bit at this diameter would exceed chuck capacity. It is commonly used by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and ironworkers drilling cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, and similar ferrous materials. The reduced 1/2-inch shank fits corded drills, magnetic base drills, and drill presses equipped with standard 1/2-inch keyless or keyed chucks. The Series 190C designation places this bit in a general-purpose cobalt line intended for production and field use across a broad range of steel grades and cast iron components.
Designed for use in portable drills and drill presses fitted with 1/2-inch chucks. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel, including alloy steel and carbon steel grades. No coolant is required per manufacturer specification.
This bit should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or tradespeople familiar with metal drilling procedures. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and verify the chuck is tightened fully on the reduced shank to prevent slippage. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling and operating. Inspect the cutting tip for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the split point shows significant degradation.
