The CHICAGO-LATROBE 52451 is a reduced shank twist drill bit designed for portable drilling applications across a range of workpiece materials. The bit measures 51/64 inch (0.7969 inch) in diameter with a 1/2 inch Weldon shank, an overall length of 6 inches, and a flute length of 3-1/8 inches. Constructed from high speed steel with a coated finish, it features a 118-degree split point for positive engagement and reduced walking on entry. The three-flat Weldon shank resists rotation in the chuck and is sized to fit standard 1/2 inch drill chucks and portable drill motors. This is a general-purpose bit suited for field and shop use by electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors.
The 52451 is built for portable drilling in wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Its reduced shank design allows a larger cutting diameter to be driven by a 1/2 inch chuck without requiring a larger drill motor, making it practical for field installations where tool selection is limited. The right-hand spiral flute configuration clears chips efficiently during through-hole drilling. Typical applications include rough-in drilling through structural members, equipment mounting, and conduit or pipe penetrations where a 51/64 inch hole diameter is specified.
Designed for use in portable drill motors and drill presses equipped with a 1/2 inch chuck. Compatible with Weldon-style toolholding systems. Suitable for general-purpose drilling in wood, alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron per Series 190F specifications.
Installation should be performed by qualified tradespeople following applicable safety codes for portable power tool operation. Ensure the drill motor is powered off and the bit is fully seated and secured in the Weldon chuck or holder before operation. Do not exceed the drill motor rated speed for the material being drilled. Wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before starting the cut.
