The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50901 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for high-production drilling in tough materials including cast iron and steel. Built to Series 559 specifications, this heavy-duty bit measures 0.081 inches (Wire Gauge 46) in diameter with an overall length of 1-3/4 inches and a flute length of 3/4 inch. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements. M42 cobalt material grade gives this bit added heat resistance and edge retention compared to standard high-speed steel, making it well suited to interrupted cuts and harder workpiece materials. A parallel web configuration and web-thinned geometry support consistent chip evacuation during short-hole drilling operations.
Screw machine length bits are the standard choice in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and screw machine setups where a shorter flute length improves rigidity and reduces deflection. This bit is appropriate for drilling cast iron and steel in both job-shop and production environments. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. Right-hand cut geometry follows conventional drilling setups. Two spiral flutes provide adequate chip clearance for the small diameter in typical short-hole applications.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders that accept straight-cylindrical shanks; compatible with CNC machining centers, turret lathes, drill presses, and hand-held power tools configured for screw machine length bits drilling cast iron and steel workpieces.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool-room technician familiar with cutting tool selection and speeds-and-feeds for cobalt drill bits. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning any drilling operation and confirm chuck or collet runout is within acceptable limits for the 0.081-inch diameter. Ensure the machine spindle is at a complete stop before changing or inspecting the bit. Follow the machine manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when operating drilling equipment.
