The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50888 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in ferrous metals including cast iron and steel. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat and wear resistance that standard HSS bits cannot match in demanding applications. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows drilling without a center punch on most surfaces. At 1-7/8 inches overall length, this stub-length geometry provides rigidity that reduces deflection in short-hole work. Right-hand spiral flutes with a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently while maintaining cutting edge stability. This bit is intended for use by machinists, fabricators, and maintenance technicians working on production or repair operations.
The 50888 is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine, turret lathe, and CNC drilling applications where short bit length minimizes runout and maximizes rigidity. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard drill chucks across a wide range of machine types. The heavy-duty M42 cobalt formulation makes it appropriate for interrupted cuts, scale, and work-hardened materials where economy-grade bits fail prematurely. A web-thinned parallel web design reduces thrust requirements at the point, easing entry into solid stock without pilot drilling.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and machine tool spindles accepting straight-cylindrical shanks; primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel per Series 559 specifications.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with machine tool operation. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the drill chuck before operation and verify runout before cutting. Always use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to maximize tool life, noting this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and replace when point geometry degrades to prevent oversize holes or tool breakage.
