The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50825 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in cast iron and steel. Built to Series 559 standards, it carries a 7/16 inch (0.4375 inch) diameter and a 135-degree split point that reduces thrust and self-centers on entry without a center punch. The two-flute spiral design with web thinning keeps chip evacuation consistent under load. At 3-7/16 inches overall length with a 2-1/16 inch flute length, this is a stub-style bit suited for drill press, CNC, and hand-drill work where rigidity matters more than reach. M42 cobalt construction provides heat resistance for cutting ferrous materials at higher speeds.
This bit is intended for production and maintenance drilling in ferrous metals, specifically cast iron and steel. The short screw machine length reduces deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it a common choice in machine shops, fabrication environments, and industrial maintenance settings. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems without adapters. Right-hand spiral and right-hand cut make it compatible with all standard drill equipment. It is sold individually and is appropriate for professionals who need a consistent, heavy-duty bit for repetitive or high-feed drilling operations.
Designed for use in standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 559 heavy-duty cobalt drill bit line.
Install into a properly sized chuck or collet and verify shank seating before operation. Power down or de-energize the drill press or CNC spindle completely before changing bits. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to manage heat buildup, even though this bit does not have coolant-through capability. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use, particularly when drilling abrasive cast iron grades.
