The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50717 is an extra length, high speed steel twist drill bit designed for long-reach drilling applications where standard-length bits fall short. At 10 inches overall length with a 7.5-inch spiral flute and a 0.1562-inch diameter, this bit handles deep-hole work in tight or deep workpiece setups. The oxide finish provides moderate lubricity and surface protection. The right-hand cutting, two-flute spiral design with a 118-degree notched point and web-thinned, tapered web geometry reduces entry force and helps maintain accuracy through the cut. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working in fabrication, maintenance, and mechanical contracting reach for this bit when access depth is the limiting factor.
This drill bit is suited for drilling into cast iron and steel in applications that require extended reach beyond a standard jobber-length bit. Typical scenarios include deep-cavity work, through-bolt clearance drilling in structural assemblies, and mechanical or electrical rough-in work where an obstacle or fixture prevents a short bit from seating fully in the chuck. The Series 120X designation indicates this is a purpose-built extra length line rather than a jobber bit with an extended shank, meaning the flute geometry is optimized for the full working length.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1562-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Intended for long-reach drilling applications per Series 120X general purpose specifications.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and electricians using drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills with keyed or keyless chucks. Secure the shank fully and evenly in the chuck before operation to prevent runout across the extended length. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for steel workpieces to manage heat buildup given the extended flute length. Inspect the bit for deflection or chatter during use, as the increased length-to-diameter ratio makes rigidity of the workpiece setup critical.
