The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50298 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it delivers reliable performance in general-purpose production and maintenance drilling. The bit features a 118-degree standard point angle, a web-thinned and tapered web configuration for reduced thrust at entry, and a regular spiral flute for efficient chip evacuation. Overall length is 6 inches with a flute length of 3-5/8 inches. It is part of the Series 120 line and is sized at 0.1990 inches diameter, corresponding to wire gauge size number 8.
This drill bit is suited for use in machine shop, maintenance, and fabrication environments where drilling into ferrous metals is routine. The taper length body provides additional reach compared to a jobber-length bit, making it useful in applications where standard-length bits cannot access the work. Right-hand cut and straight shank make it compatible with conventional drill presses, lathes, and hand drills with standard chucks. It is sold individually and is appropriate for licensed machinists, maintenance mechanics, pipefitters, and general trade professionals working with metal substrates.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron applications. Straight shank fits standard drill press chucks, lathe tailstocks, and hand drill chucks sized for the 0.1990-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with metal drilling practices. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and ensure the bit is fully seated and tightened in the chuck before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to extend bit life and maintain hole tolerance. Always wear appropriate eye and hand protection per applicable shop safety standards.
