The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50078 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a gold oxide coating, it delivers extended tool life compared to standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without center-punching and reduces thrust in tough workpieces. At 6-5/8 inches overall length with a 4-13/16-inch flute, it fits standard drill chucks and drill presses used in metal fabrication, aerospace component work, and maintenance shops. A right-hand spiral flute clears chips efficiently during through-hole operations.
This bit is rated for drilling titanium and other high-strength metals, making it a go-to for aerospace, industrial maintenance, and heavy fabrication environments. The straight cylindrical shank measures 9/16 inches in diameter, compatible with standard keyed and keyless chucks at that capacity. The Series 550 design meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, confirming dimensional and performance conformance for applications where specification compliance matters. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and field maintenance techs working with titanium alloys or hardened steel will find this bit suited to the task.
Designed for use in drilling titanium and other high-strength metals per NAS 907 Type J specification; fits any drill press or hand drill with a chuck capacity of 9/16 inches or larger using a straight cylindrical shank.
This bit is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians in drill presses, milling machines, or heavy-duty hand drills. Always secure the workpiece and confirm the chuck is fully tightened before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling titanium or hardened steel to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Do not exceed the recommended RPM range for the bit diameter and material being drilled.
