The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49743 is a taper length drill bit designed for professional metalworking and machining applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, it features a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces cutting resistance at the tip. The bit measures 43/64 inch (0.6719 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 9.25 inches and a flute length of 5.375 inches. A straight shank and right-hand spiral flute deliver consistent chip evacuation during drilling. Licensed machinists, tool and die techs, and maintenance mechanics are the typical installers.
This drill bit is suited for general-purpose drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The taper length body provides added reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it useful in deep-hole applications or where clearance is limited by fixtures or workholding setups. Series 120 construction reflects a general-purpose grade appropriate for production and maintenance environments using standard drill presses, lathes, or hand-held magnetic drills running at appropriate feed and speed rates for the material.
Designed for general-purpose drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces. Compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a 0.6719-inch straight shank. Suited for drill presses, lathes, and magnetic base drills configured for HSS tooling.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with proper drilling speeds and feeds for HSS tooling. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and verify that the drill chuck is fully tightened on the straight shank before operation. Do not exceed the recommended surface footage for HSS in the target material, and use cutting fluid where appropriate to extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use.
