The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49735 is a taper length twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in ferrous metals and alloy steels. Ground from high speed steel (HSS) stock and web-thinned for reduced thrust at entry, this bit carries a 118-degree standard point angle suited to a wide range of metal drilling applications. The straight shank measures 0.5469 inches in diameter, matching the 35/64-inch cutting diameter, making it compatible with standard drill chucks. At 8.25 inches overall length with a 4.875-inch flute, the taper length body provides extra reach compared to a jobber-length bit while maintaining rigidity. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and deep-hole operations.
This bit is intended for use on alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces in metalworking, maintenance, and fabrication environments. The taper length configuration is commonly chosen when a jobber-length bit cannot reach the workpiece or when drilling through thicker stock in machine shop and industrial maintenance settings. Series 120 represents a general-purpose grade suitable for use in drill presses, milling machines, and hand-held equipment where a straight-shank bit is appropriate. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces cutting resistance and improves centering at the start of the cut.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose taper length drill bit for use in drill presses, machine tools, and hand-held equipment accepting straight-shank bits in the 35/64 inch size range.
Install in a drill press, milling machine, or hand-held drill with a chuck rated for the 0.5469-inch straight shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before cutting. Use cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve surface finish. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace when the bit no longer cuts cleanly without excessive pressure.
