The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49428 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed steel drilling in demanding industrial and trade applications. Built to Series 159 heavy-duty standards, it features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.042 inches in diameter with a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches, making it suitable for precision work. The two-flute spiral design with web thinning promotes efficient chip evacuation. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical contractors as well as machinists and fabricators rely on this bit for tight-clearance drilling where standard length bits cannot reach.
This bit is well suited for drilling into cast iron and steel in production or field environments where screw machine length tools are required. The shortened overall length of 1-3/8 inches provides added rigidity and reduced deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it a preferred choice for CNC screw machines, drill presses, and hand-held power tools in constrained spaces. This bit is installed and operated by machinists, tool and die workers, pipefitters, and mechanical trade professionals familiar with rotary cutting tools. Secure the shank fully in a properly rated drill chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material when drilling ferrous metals to extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges and point before each use and replace the bit if chipping or wear is observed.
