The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49423 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in metal fabrication and machining applications. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point with web thinning for fast penetration and reduced thrust on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks. At 0.0595 inches in diameter (Wire Size 53) and 1.625 inches overall length, it is engineered for close-tolerance work requiring a diameter tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently during continuous-feed operation.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in production machining, sheet metal fabrication, and precision assembly environments. The screw machine length (stub) configuration provides rigidity and reduced deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it well-suited for drill press, CNC turret, and screw machine operations where short, stiff tooling is preferred. It meets NAS 907 specification requirements and is manufactured to ISO standards, supporting quality-controlled production environments.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard drill chucks and collets accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Suitable for use in drill presses, CNC turret machines, and automatic screw machines requiring Wire Size 53 stub-length tooling.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with cutting tool setup and machine operation. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits for the application. Always bring the spindle to a full stop before changing tooling. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when selecting feed rates and speeds for the workpiece material.
