The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49408 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in ferrous metals including cast iron and steel. Manufactured from high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point and web-thinned geometry that reduces walking, lowers thrust requirements, and extends tool life in heavy-duty applications. At 0.1015 inches in diameter (Wire Size 38), it falls in the small-diameter range and is well suited for tight-tolerance hole work. The parallel web and regular spiral flute combination promotes efficient chip evacuation. A licensed machinist, tool-and-die technician, or HVAC/plumbing fabricator will find this bit appropriate for repetitive, close-tolerance drilling tasks on production equipment or in the field.
The 49408 is built to NAS 907 and ISO standards, confirming dimensional and performance consistency across production runs. Its screw machine length — shorter than jobber length — provides added rigidity and reduces deflection, making it the preferred choice when drilling on drill presses, turret lathes, CNC machining centers, and screw machines where overhang must be minimized. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard chucks without slippage. This bit is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 12 units per order.
Designed for use in cast iron and steel workpieces. Compatible with any standard drill press, CNC machining center, turret lathe, screw machine, or hand drill equipped with a chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.1015-inch diameter range.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before use to prevent slippage and runout. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable machine guarding requirements when operating drilling equipment. Allow the cutting edges and workpiece to cool adequately during extended drilling runs, and use cutting fluid on steel workpieces to prolong edge life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the split point or flute edges show damage.
