The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49380 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. It is manufactured from high speed steel with a coated finish for improved wear resistance. The bit features a 135-degree split point, which reduces walking and lowers the thrust needed to start a hole. A web-thinned, parallel-web construction keeps the cutting edge geometry consistent through the tool's working life. This is a right-hand cut, two-flute spiral bit with a straight-cylindrical shank, sized at 0.1935 inches (Wire Size 10). Licensed trades and machining professionals use this bit in screw machine operations, production drilling rigs, and general-purpose drill press work.
The 49380 is built for demanding applications where tight diameter tolerances and consistent performance are required. Its screw machine length profile — shorter overall length than jobber bits — provides increased rigidity, which reduces deflection and improves hole accuracy in ferrous materials. It is well suited for high-cycle operations in metal fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where cast iron and steel are the primary workpiece materials.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style screw machine drill bit compatible with standard drill presses, screw machines, and hand drills accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in Wire Size 10 applications on cast iron and steel workpieces.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the bit is fully seated and tightened in the chuck before operation. Power down and de-energize all equipment before changing bits. Follow applicable shop safety standards and equipment manufacturer guidelines when selecting feed rate and spindle speed for the material being drilled.
