The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49208 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in steel and cast iron. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it measures 0.125 inches (1/8 inch) in diameter with an overall length of 1.875 inches and a flute length of 0.875 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers thrust requirements at entry, making it well suited for production environments where cycle time and hole accuracy matter. The web-thinned, parallel web construction supports clean chip evacuation in the tight flute geometry of a screw machine length design. HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical contractors reach for this bit when drilling through structural steel, brackets, and cast iron components.
The 49208 is a heavy-duty, Series 159 screw machine drill bit intended for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, screw machines, and hand-held power drills where a compact, stub-length tool is required. Primary workpiece materials include steel and cast iron. The short overall length of 1.875 inches reduces deflection and improves hole straightness in hard materials. It is sold individually (package quantity of 1) and must be ordered in multiples of 12.
Designed for drilling steel and cast iron workpieces. Compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Appropriate for use in drill presses, screw machines, CNC equipment, and portable power drills requiring a stub-length bit in the 0.1000 to 0.1500 inch diameter range.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck jaw engagement is even to prevent runout. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel or cast iron to reduce heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges and split point for wear before each use, as a dull 135-degree point on hard materials increases the risk of work hardening and premature bit failure. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine-specific RPM recommendations for the workpiece material and bit diameter.
