The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49203 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-precision, short-reach drilling in demanding shop and production environments. Built from high-speed steel with a coated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows for faster penetration without a center punch. At 0.0469 inches (3/64 inch) in diameter with a 1-3/8 inch overall length, it fits compact drilling applications where standard-length bits are too long. The parallel web configuration and web-thinned geometry reduce cutting resistance and heat buildup. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the primary users of this series.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine operations, CNC drilling, and manual drill press work. The short flute length of 1/2 inch and overall compact profile make it ideal for tight-clearance fixtures and multi-spindle setups. The straight-cylindrical shank with a diameter of 0.0469 inches fits standard collets and chucks used in production drilling. Regular spiral geometry provides consistent chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole applications on ferrous workpieces.
Designed for use on cast iron and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard straight-shank collets and drill chucks accepting a 0.0469-inch shank diameter. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 159 heavy-duty drill bit line.
Secure the shank fully in the collet or chuck before operation and verify runout before production drilling. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to maximize bit life, noting this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating drill presses or multi-spindle equipment. Inspect the cutting edge for wear before each use, as small-diameter bits at this size range are sensitive to chipping under excessive feed pressure.
