The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49019 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous metals and hard materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, the bit delivers superior heat resistance and edge retention under heavy-duty cutting conditions. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces thrust and enables self-centering starts without a center punch. At 3.224 inches overall length with a 1.51-inch flute length, this stub-length format provides added rigidity and reduced deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited for production drilling and tight-clearance applications. The straw oxide finish provides light surface protection. Installed by machinists, maintenance mechanics, and fabricators working in metalworking, manufacturing, and industrial maintenance environments.
The 49019 is engineered for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine, CNC, and manual drill press operations. The screw machine (stub) length reduces bit flex in deep setups and is a common choice on turret lathes, gang drills, and Bridgeport-style mills. The straight cylindrical shank measures 8.50 mm (0.3346 inches) in diameter and fits standard drill chucks. The regular spiral flute with a 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides efficient chip evacuation during through-hole and blind-hole drilling cycles.
Designed as a heavy-duty screw machine length drill bit for use in cast iron and steel. Compatible with any drill chuck accepting a straight cylindrical shank of 8.50 mm (0.3346 inches) diameter, including manual drill presses, CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and gang drill setups.
Install and remove drill bits only with the machine at a complete stop and power locked out per applicable safety procedures. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before beginning a drilling cycle. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life, noting this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the split point and cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
