The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49017 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous materials. Built to Series 559 standards and conforming to DIN 1897, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows faster penetration without a center punch. The cobalt construction — M42 material grade — provides heat resistance and edge retention when drilling cast iron, steel, and other hard workpiece materials. At 7.00 mm in diameter and 3.02 inches overall length, it is sized for compact, short-reach drilling applications where stub or screw machine length tooling is required. A straw oxide finish adds additional surface protection. Installation is performed by machinists, fabricators, and maintenance technicians working with drill presses, CNC equipment, or hand-held power tools.
This drill bit is intended for use in ferrous metalworking applications, including production drilling in cast iron and steel. The screw machine length format — shorter than jobber-length bits — provides increased rigidity and reduced deflection in close-tolerance work. The 2-flute regular spiral design with a 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports efficient chip evacuation. It is well suited to repetitive hole patterns in manufacturing, maintenance repair, and general machine shop environments where dimensional accuracy and bit longevity are priorities.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit for applications requiring a 7.00 mm screw machine length cobalt bit in the 6.50 to 8.00 mm diameter range. Compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks on drill presses, CNC drilling machines, and handheld power drills accepting a 0.2756-inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the straight shank fully in the drill chuck and verify runout before beginning operations. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. Follow applicable machine guarding requirements and shop safety protocols when operating drilling equipment.
