The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48725 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-volume, close-tolerance drilling in metal fabrication and machining applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it cuts in a right-hand direction with a standard 118-degree point angle. The bit measures 0.1495 inches in diameter, corresponding to wire gauge size 25, with an overall length of 2.0625 inches and a spiral flute length of 1 inch. The web-thinned, parallel-web construction reduces thrust at the cutting point and helps maintain hole accuracy across cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. Diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0007 inches, meeting ISO standards for general purpose tooling.
Screw machine length drill bits are the shortest of the common drill bit series, making this bit ideal for use in screw machines, CNC lathes, drill presses, and turret setups where rigidity and minimal deflection are priorities. The shortened flute length provides added stiffness compared to jobber-length bits, which reduces chatter and improves hole quality when drilling production runs through cast iron, steel, and non-ferrous stock. Machinists, tool and die makers, and production shop techs reach for this series when working in tight fixtures or automated tooling heads where overhang must be minimized.
Designed for use in screw machines, CNC lathes, drill presses, and turret tooling heads. Rated for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. Fits any chuck or collet accepting a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.1495 inches diameter.
This bit is installed by machinists and production shop technicians in standard drill chucks or collets. Always ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck to prevent slippage under cutting load. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain hole quality.
