The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48576 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for metal cutting in industrial and trade applications. Manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide finish, it measures 1.1875 inches (1-3/16 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 6.625 inches and a flute length of 4.25 inches. The 118-degree standard point angle is suited to general-purpose drilling in ferrous metals. The shorter body of screw machine length bits provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length equivalents, reducing deflection when boring into harder stock. This bit is typically used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals who require consistent hole tolerances in production or repair environments.
The 48576 is configured for right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute pattern and a straight-cylindrical shank for compatibility with standard drill chucks. Its primary workpiece materials are alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron, making it a fit for structural, mechanical, and fabrication work. The Series 157 designation places it within a general-purpose high speed steel line. Coolant-through capability is not available on this bit, so it is best suited for dry or externally lubricated drilling setups.
Rated for primary use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron workpieces. Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit for use in drill presses, lathes, and hand-held drilling equipment equipped with a chuck sized for a 1.1875-inch straight shank.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly rated drill chuck before operation; verify the chuck capacity supports a 1.1875-inch shank. Power down and lock out the drilling equipment before installing or removing the bit. Apply a suitable cutting fluid externally when drilling ferrous metals to extend tool life and maintain hole tolerance, as this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges and point before each use and remove the bit from service if chipping or deformation is observed.
