The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48523 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed steel (HSS) cutting in general-purpose metalworking and fabrication applications. At 23/64 inch (0.3594 inches) in diameter, it features a 118-degree standard point angle, a two-flute spiral configuration, and a straight-cylindrical shank. The overall length is 3-1/16 inches with a flute length of 1-3/4 inches. The bright, uncoated finish is standard for HSS general-purpose bits. Web thinning reduces the chisel edge load at the drill point, improving penetration in harder materials. This bit is sold individually and is suited for use in screw machine setups, drill presses, and handheld drill applications on the shop floor or in the field.
This bit is appropriate for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel in both production and maintenance-repair environments. Its screw machine length — shorter than a jobber-length bit — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection in tight setups or when drilling with minimal workpiece clearance. Machinists, tool and die workers, pipefitters, and industrial maintenance technicians commonly use this bit type for close-tolerance hole-making operations.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or stock drill bit for screw machine, drill press, and hand drill applications requiring a 23/64 inch diameter hole in cast iron, non-ferrous metal, or steel workpieces. Conforms to ISO standards for drill bit geometry.
Install this bit in a properly rated drill chuck and verify chuck tightness before operation. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation or movement. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubrication when drilling steel to extend bit life and maintain dimensional accuracy. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and OSHA general industry standards when operating stationary or portable drilling equipment.
