The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48518 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in metalworking and industrial maintenance applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it measures 9/32 inch (0.2812 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 2-11/16 inches and a flute length of 1-1/2 inches. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned geometry reduce entry force and improve chip evacuation. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks. This bit is part of the Series 157 general purpose line and is suited for machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working across a range of metal substrates.
The 48518 is engineered for use on cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. Its screw machine length profile — shorter than a jobber bit — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection, making it well suited for drill press work, turret lathes, screw machines, and CNC applications where close-tolerance hole location matters. The regular spiral flute and parallel web configuration support consistent chip flow in moderate-depth holes. General purpose grade construction covers a broad range of production and repair drilling tasks without requiring specialty coatings or coolant-through capability.
Designed as a general purpose replacement or production drill bit for use in standard drill chucks, drill presses, turret lathes, and screw machines accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch diameter range.
Install the shank fully into the drill chuck and tighten securely before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent rotation during drilling. Use cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life, particularly when drilling steel. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use — a dull bit increases thrust load and can cause workpiece damage or bit breakage.
