The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48517 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-throughput drilling in metalworking and machining applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bit measures 17/64 inch (0.2656 inches) in diameter and carries a 118-degree standard point angle. The two-flute spiral design with web-thinned geometry reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. The straight cylindrical shank seats cleanly in standard drill chucks. Overall length is 2-5/8 inches with a flute length of 1-7/16 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance mechanics install this bit in drill presses, CNC machines, and hand-held power drills for general-purpose metal removal.
The 48517 is rated for use on cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. Its screw machine length body — shorter than jobber length — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection in close-tolerance drilling setups. This makes it well suited to production environments where repeatable hole location and diameter consistency are critical. The diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0010 inches, supporting accurate fit-up for tapped holes, reamed bores, and press-fit applications. It meets ISO standards for drill geometry and dimensional accuracy.
The 48517 belongs to the Chicago-Latrobe Series 157 screw machine drill line and is designed for general-purpose drilling in cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and steel workpieces using any standard drill chuck that accepts a straight cylindrical shank.
Install in a drill press, lathe tailstock, or CNC spindle using a properly sized collet or drill chuck rated for the shank diameter. Secure the workpiece fully before drilling and confirm spindle speed is appropriate for the material and bit diameter. Coolant-through is not supported by this bit; use external cutting fluid on steel and cast iron where needed to extend tool life. Inspect the point geometry before use — a damaged or off-center point will cause oversized or wandering holes.
