The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48511 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. It measures 11/64 inch (0.1719 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 2-1/8 inches and a flute length of 1-1/16 inches. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and features a standard 118-degree point angle. The straight-cylindrical shank and web-thinned parallel web design allow it to seat securely in standard chucks and reduce entry resistance. This Series 157 bit is installed and used by machinists, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and general trade professionals who need a compact, stub-length bit for close-quarters or machine-mount drilling.
The 48511 is suited for screw machine and production drilling applications where a shorter flute length provides added rigidity and reduced deflection. Its right-hand spiral flute geometry handles a range of workpiece materials including cast iron, steel, and non-ferrous metals. The compact overall length makes it practical for drill press work, CNC setups, and hand-held drilling in confined spaces. The 118-degree standard point is compatible with common drill geometries and requires no special grinding for typical general-purpose use.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit for use with cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks across drill presses, lathes, and hand-held power tools that accept a 11/64 inch shank.
Install into a standard straight-shank chuck and tighten securely before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before starting the cut. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit; apply cutting fluid externally when drilling harder steels to extend tool life.
