The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48506 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and maintenance applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this bit measures 3/32 inch (0.0938 inches) in diameter and carries a 118-degree standard point angle. The shortened screw machine length body provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection when drilling in metal. Two spiral flutes with a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently. Web thinning reduces thrust force at the cutting tip, making starts cleaner on harder materials. Machinists, tool and die shops, and general maintenance technicians are the primary users of this bit.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel in both production and repair settings. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks on bench drill presses, CNC turret drills, and hand-held power drills. The screw machine length format is commonly specified when chuck clearance is limited or when extra rigidity is needed for tight-tolerance holes. It conforms to ISO standards and falls within the Series 157 product family from CHICAGO-LATROBE.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks across bench drill presses, CNC turret drills, and hand-held power drills accepting a 3/32 inch shank.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the drill chuck before operation and verify concentricity to minimize runout. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel or cast iron to extend tool life, even though no coolant-through feature is present. Always wear eye protection and ensure the workpiece is clamped securely before drilling. Discard or re-sharpen the bit if point chipping or excessive heat discoloration is observed, as continued use of a damaged bit reduces hole quality and can damage the workpiece.
