The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48395 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in ferrous materials including cast iron and steel. It features a 135-degree split point with web thinning for fast starts without a center punch, a regular spiral flute for efficient chip evacuation, and a straight-cylindrical shank for positive grip in standard drill chucks and quick-change holders. Manufactured from high speed steel with a coated finish, the 48395 delivers durability in demanding shop and field applications. The parallel web configuration and heavy-duty designation make this bit appropriate for consistent, repeatable hole quality in production environments.
This drill bit is suited for metal fabrication shops, machine shops, HVAC contractors, plumbers, and electricians who drill through steel structural members, junction box knockouts, sheet metal assemblies, and cast iron components. The screw machine length body is shorter than a jobber drill, which improves rigidity and reduces deflection when drilling in tight spaces or with handheld power tools. Wire size 25 corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1495 inches, a common clearance size for tapping and fastener prep work. Right-hand cut geometry is standard for conventional CW-rotating drills and driver tools.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct equivalent screw machine drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Conforms to NAS 907 specification under NAS designation and meets ISO standards per Series 2159.
Install in a properly rated drill press, CNC machine, or handheld power drill with a chuck sized for the straight-cylindrical shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operating. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel or cast iron to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point or flutes show visible damage.
