The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48225 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it features a 135-degree split point and web-thinned parallel web for reduced thrust and faster penetration on tough ferrous materials. At 25/64 inch (0.3906 inches) in diameter, this bit runs a 1-7/8-inch flute length within an overall length of 3-1/4 inches. The stubby screw machine length body provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length drills, making it well suited for drill presses, CNC turret lathes, and screw machines where overhang must be minimized. Two right-hand spiral flutes clear chips efficiently under continuous-duty conditions.
This bit is intended for trade and industrial use in metalworking environments where consistent, repeatable hole quality is required. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. Heavy-duty tool performance classification makes it appropriate for production shops, maintenance departments, and machine trades. The Series 2159 designation and NAS 907 specification confirm conformance to aerospace and industrial dimensional standards, supporting use in quality-controlled environments where traceability matters.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and production drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting straight-cylindrical shanks; rated for cast iron and steel workpiece materials per Series 2159 specification.
Installation is performed by machinists, tool-and-die professionals, and maintenance technicians on drill presses, lathes, and CNC equipment. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the bit from the chuck or collet. Verify chuck or collet size matches the straight-cylindrical shank diameter before tightening. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating drilling equipment.
