The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48214 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-output drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers the thrust needed to start a hole. The 7/32 inch (0.2188 inch) diameter, web-thinned construction, and parallel web configuration make it well-suited for production drilling where cycle time and tool life matter. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix clear chips efficiently. Overall length is 2-3/8 inches with a 1-1/4 inch flute length, and it runs a straight-cylindrical shank for standard three-jaw chuck mounting.
Screw machine length drill bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which improves rigidity and reduces deflection in drill press, CNC, and screw machine applications. The 48214 is rated for heavy-duty use and is a practical choice for machine shops, maintenance technicians, and fabricators drilling steel and cast iron in repetitive or production setups. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. Diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0007 inch, supporting close-tolerance work.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel. Fits any standard drill press, CNC machine, or screw machine equipped with a three-jaw chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 7/32 inch diameter range. Part of CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 2159.
Install and remove drill bits only when the machine is fully stopped and the chuck key is clear of the chuck. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent rotation or movement during the cut. Use cutting fluid or coolant as appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life, noting this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace bits that show signs of chipping or excessive wear.
