The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47706 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to NAS 907 Type B standards, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting pressure at startup. The gold finish indicates cobalt steel construction throughout, providing added heat resistance over standard high-speed steel. At 2.25 inches overall length with a 1.25-inch flute length, this is a compact, right-hand-cut bit suited for precise, repeatable hole-making in production or field environments. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working with titanium, stainless, or similarly hard alloys reach for this grade when standard HSS bits fail prematurely.
The 47706 is a Series 550ASP bit sized at 3/32 inch (0.0938 inch decimal), with a straight-cylindrical shank of the same diameter for direct chuck compatibility. Its primary application is drilling titanium and other high-strength metals where heat buildup and bit wear are the main failure modes. The regular spiral flute and tapered, web-thinned geometry improve chip evacuation and reduce thrust requirements. This bit is commonly used in aerospace fabrication, HVAC equipment manufacturing, and metal fabrication shops where NAS-specification tooling is required.

Install in a properly sized 3-jaw or collet chuck and verify shank is fully seated before use. Apply appropriate cutting fluid when drilling titanium or stainless steel to extend bit life and manage heat. Use consistent feed pressure and avoid dwelling at full depth, which can work-harden titanium and dull the cutting edge. Worn cobalt bits should be replaced rather than reground without proper equipment, as incorrect regrind geometry on a split-point bit reduces cutting performance.
