The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47378 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in ferrous materials. Manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it measures 17.25 mm (0.6791 inches) in diameter and carries an overall length of 184 mm (7.24 inches). The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned, tapered web geometry reduce entry force and improve centering on flat and curved surfaces. With a 2-flute regular spiral configuration and right-hand cutting direction, this bit suits production and maintenance drilling operations performed by machinists, pipefitters, and general tradespeople working with ferrous stock.
The 47378 is built for drilling cast iron and steel in both shop and field environments. Its straight-cylindrical shank fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks across a wide range of portable and bench-mounted drilling equipment. The Series 150 design conforms to DIN 338 specification, making it a direct fit for metric-dimensioned applications where 15 mm and larger diameter tooling is required. The oxide finish provides a measure of corrosion resistance during storage and use. This bit is suited to general manufacturing, mechanical contracting, and maintenance work where consistent hole quality in common ferrous materials is the priority.

Install the straight-cylindrical shank fully into a properly sized drill chuck and tighten securely before operation. Secure workpieces with appropriate clamping before drilling to prevent rotation and bit damage. Use cutting fluid or coolant as appropriate for the workpiece material and feed rate. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, and regrind or replace the bit when point geometry is degraded to maintain hole quality and prevent tool breakage.
