The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46738 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a gold oxide coating, this bit handles demanding applications where standard HSS tooling falls short. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking on hard surfaces. At 1-3/8 inches overall length with a 0.0310-inch diameter, it is sized for wire gauge #68 work. The web-thinned, tapered web design improves chip evacuation and lowers thrust during drilling. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix move chips efficiently out of the bore.
This drill bit is suited for trade and industrial applications requiring precision small-diameter holes in titanium, stainless steel, hardened alloys, and other difficult workpiece materials. It is commonly used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working on aerospace components, instrumentation assemblies, and structural metalwork where tight-tolerance holes are required. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collets without modification. Series 550 heavy-duty grade construction makes it appropriate for both manual and CNC drilling setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-duty drill bit compatible with any drill chuck or collet accepting a 0.0310-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for use on titanium and other high-strength workpiece materials per NAS 907 specification.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or trade technicians familiar with small-diameter drilling practices. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized chuck or collet before use, and verify spindle runout is within acceptable limits to prevent bit breakage at this diameter. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain hole tolerance. Avoid excessive feed pressure, which can deflect or snap small-diameter cobalt bits.
