The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45632 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in ferrous metals including cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide coating, the bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on contact and lowers the thrust required to start a hole. The 1/2-inch diameter, straight-cylindrical shank, and 6-inch overall length make it a standard choice for production drilling and maintenance work. A web-thinned, tapered web design improves chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup during extended use. This bit is rated to NAS 907 Type B standards and is sized for use in standard 1/2-inch chucks.
The 45632 is suited for drilling into cast iron, stainless steel, and general-purpose steel in both shop and field environments. The 4.5-inch spiral flute length provides sufficient clearance for through-hole work in most common material thicknesses. Right-hand cut geometry is compatible with standard drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic base drills. Machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and HVAC service professionals commonly use jobber-length bits of this size for flange drilling, bracket fabrication, and equipment installation work.
Designed for use in standard 1/2-inch drill chucks on drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic base drills. Rated for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel per NAS 907 Type B specification.
Install into a properly sized 1/2-inch chuck and confirm the shank is fully seated before operation. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or hard cast iron to extend bit life and prevent work hardening. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace if chipping or rounding is observed. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA standards when operating rotary cutting tools.
