The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45020 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, this bit handles elevated cutting temperatures without breaking down. It carries a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.0700 inches in diameter, and the overall length is 2 inches with a 1-inch flute length. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements. This is a production-grade bit sized for precision work, intended for use by machinists and tool and die professionals in shop or field applications.
This bit is optimized for drilling titanium as its primary workpiece material, making it a direct fit for aerospace, medical, and industrial fabrication environments where cobalt tooling is specified. The TiAlN coating provides oxidation resistance and extended tool life at higher surface speeds. The regular spiral flute with right-hand cut promotes consistent chip evacuation in deep-hole drilling scenarios. It conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it suitable for jobs where specification compliance is required. The Series 550TA designation places it in a line built for demanding materials beyond standard high-speed steel capability.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and CNC spindles accepting a 0.0700-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material is titanium; the cobalt-TiAlN combination also performs in stainless steel, hardened alloys, and other high-strength metals where standard HSS bits are insufficient.
This bit is installed by machinists and tool professionals using standard drill chucks, collet systems, or CNC tool holders. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the chuck is tightened to the manufacturer-specified torque for the holding device being used. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for titanium and hard-alloy applications to manage heat buildup, as coolant-through is not supported by this bit geometry. Inspect the cutting edges and coating before each use and replace the bit at the first sign of edge breakdown to avoid workpiece damage.
