The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44822 is a taper length drill bit from the Series 520 line, designed for high-performance drilling in tough and exotic materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a black oxide finish, this bit delivers the heat and wear resistance required for demanding production environments. It features an 11/32 inch diameter with a 135-degree split point for self-centering starts and reduced thrust. The spiral flute geometry and web-thinned, tapered web configuration promote efficient chip evacuation and clean, accurate holes. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades as well as industrial machinists rely on this tool for its consistent performance in difficult materials.
The 44822 is built for drilling cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium - materials common in industrial fabrication, mechanical contracting, and heavy maintenance work. The taper length body provides additional rigidity compared to a jobber-length bit, making it well suited for applications where hole depth and straightness are critical. With a 4-1/8 inch flute length and a 6-1/2 inch overall length, it reaches depths that shorter bits cannot while maintaining cutting stability. The straight cylindrical shank seats reliably in standard drill chucks and CNC tool holders.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose taper length drill for use in standard drill chucks and CNC spindles accepting an 11/32 inch straight cylindrical shank. Rated for cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium per manufacturer material application data.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck or collet and verify the shank is fully seated before operation. Power down and de-energize all machinery before changing tooling. Follow applicable OSHA machine guarding and eye protection requirements when operating drilling equipment. Avoid running cobalt bits at excessively high speeds in hardened materials without appropriate cutting fluid, as overheating shortens tool life.
