The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44816 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications where standard-length bits lack the reach or heat resistance required. Built from M-42 cobalt high-speed steel, it carries a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on hard surfaces. The 0.2500 inch diameter corresponds to a Letter E designation. A web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. Series 520 construction targets high-performance cutting in tough ferrous and exotic alloys. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, or industrial technicians working with hard-to-drill base materials will find this bit suited to production and maintenance drilling.
The 44816 is rated for use in cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. Its taper length body - 6.125 inches overall with a 3.75 inch flute length - gives additional reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it useful in confined bores, deeper hole applications, and situations where standard-length bits cannot clear the workpiece. The straight, non-threaded shank measures 0.2500 inches in diameter and 2.375 inches in length, fitting standard 3-jaw chucks and compatible drill presses or hand drills without adapters.
Rated for drilling cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. Straight shank fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks. No specific machine model compatibility is stated by the manufacturer for this bit.
This bit is installed and used by machinists, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and industrial maintenance trades. Secure the straight shank firmly in a calibrated chuck before use and verify runout is within tolerance before drilling hard alloys. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling Inconel, titanium, or manganese steel to manage heat buildup and extend tool life. Coolant-through is not supported by this bit, so external flood or mist cooling is required for continuous-duty cuts in exotic materials.
