Product Description

The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44805 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications in professional machine shop and fabrication environments. Built from M-42 cobalt high-speed steel, it measures 5/64 inch (0.0781 inches) in diameter with a 135-degree split point and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that promotes self-centering entry and reduces walking on hard materials. The flute length is 2 inches, overall length is 3-3/4 inches, and the straight shank diameter matches the drill diameter at 0.0781 inches. Right-hand spiral flutes clear chips efficiently during through-hole operations. This bit is sold individually and ordered in multiples of 12.

This drill bit is engineered for use in cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium — materials that demand a high-cobalt grade to maintain edge integrity under heat and pressure. It suits production drilling, tool and die work, and maintenance applications where standard HSS bits lose hardness and deflect. The taper length body provides additional rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it appropriate for deeper hole entry on milling machines, drill presses, and CNC drilling centers. Series 520 designates the Chicago-Latrobe cobalt taper length line.

Key Features

  • M-42 cobalt high-speed steel construction for heat resistance in hard and exotic alloys
  • 135-degree split point with web thinning for self-centering, reduced thrust, and cleaner entry
  • Taper length body at 3-3/4 inches overall provides greater rigidity than standard jobber-length bits
  • Right-hand spiral flutes with regular helix for consistent chip evacuation
  • Coated finish to extend surface hardness and reduce friction during cutting
  • Diameter tolerance held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches for precise hole sizing

Compatibility

Designed for use in cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. Straight shank is compatible with standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.0781-inch shank diameter. Part of the Chicago-Latrobe Series 520 cobalt taper length line.

Installation Notes

This bit is installed and used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians operating drill presses, milling machines, or CNC drilling equipment. Secure the straight shank firmly in a properly sized drill chuck or collet before operation. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when drilling Inconel or titanium, to manage heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, as cobalt bits used beyond their service life on hard alloys can fracture.
