The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44138 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it carries a wire size designation of 68, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.0310 inches. The 118-degree standard point angle provides clean entry in cast iron and steel without requiring specialized point preparation. With a regular spiral flute and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration, this bit maintains chip evacuation efficiency in small-diameter applications. It is a Series 150 tool intended for use in production and maintenance drilling operations by machinists, millwrights, and tool-room technicians.
This bit is suited for precision small-hole work in cast iron and steel, covering both light production drilling and maintenance repair tasks. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard drill chucks without adapters. At an overall length of 1-3/8 inches and a flute length of 0.5 inches, it fits compact workholding setups and bench drill presses where clearance is limited. Its general-purpose classification makes it a practical stocking item for shops that regularly work with wire-gauge-sized tooling in the sub-1/16-inch range.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting straight-cylindrical shanks, suitable for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces.
This tool is installed and operated by machinists, tool-room technicians, and maintenance mechanics using drill presses, CNC machines, or hand-held drilling equipment with a compatible chuck. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable limits for the application. At this diameter, feed pressure should be light and controlled to avoid tip breakage. Coolant through is not supported on this bit, so flood or mist cooling at the workpiece surface is recommended when drilling steel at elevated speeds.
