The CHICAGO-LATROBE 42027 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for heavy-duty metal drilling applications. Built from M7 high speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, it delivers extended tool life and heat resistance compared to uncoated HSS bits. The bit measures 27/64 inch (0.4200 inch decimal) in diameter with a 135-degree notched split point that reduces walking and allows drilling to begin without a center punch in most setups. Overall length is 5-3/8 inches with a parabolic flute design that promotes efficient chip evacuation in deep-hole drilling.
This bit is suited for drilling steel and other ferrous workpiece materials in manufacturing, fabrication, maintenance, and trade service environments. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. The parabolic flute geometry and web-thinned, tapered web construction make it particularly effective when drilling through structural steel, angle iron, plate, and similar stock commonly encountered by electricians, pipefitters, iron workers, and general mechanical contractors. It is a right-hand cut bit intended for conventional forward-rotation drilling.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or service-stock drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.4219-inch straight shank; compatible with benchtop drill presses, magnetic drills, and right-angle drill setups used in trade and industrial applications.
A licensed or journeyman-level tradesperson should select cutting speed and feed rate appropriate for the workpiece material and drill press capacity before use. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation or movement. Use cutting fluid or coolant on ferrous materials to prolong bit life, even though this bit does not support through-coolant. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and remove from service if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
