The CHICAGO-LATROBE 11156 is a high speed steel aircraft extension drill bit designed for deep-reach drilling applications in metal, alloy, and composite materials. Built to Series 912 specifications, this bit features a 135-degree split point that is self-centering, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on curved or angled surfaces. The 0.116-inch diameter corresponds to Wire Size 32, with a flute length of 1.625 inches and a 12-inch overall length that provides the extended reach required in aircraft, HVAC, and structural metalwork. The oxide finish provides mild corrosion resistance during storage and use. Licensed machinists, sheet metal workers, and HVAC installers are the typical end users.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in tight or deep clearance situations where a standard-length bit cannot reach. Common applications include drilling through aircraft frames and skins, HVAC ductwork flanges, electrical panel knockouts, and structural steel assemblies. The right-hand spiral flute and web-thinned tapered web configuration promote efficient chip evacuation in deep holes. General-purpose tool performance rating makes it appropriate for a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous stock at standard shop speeds and feeds.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose aircraft extension drill bit compatible with standard 3-jaw drill chucks and power drills that accept a 0.116-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Conforms to NAS 907 Type B.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists, sheet metal workers, or licensed tradespeople following applicable shop safety procedures and relevant OSHA standards. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and verify chuck tightness before each use. Do not exceed the recommended speeds and feeds for the material being drilled, and allow the bit to cool or use appropriate cutting fluid to prevent premature wear. Inspect the split point and cutting edges for damage before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
