The CARMEX 3/8EXRH8NPTP2 is a laydown-style threading insert designed for cutting external NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads on CNC lathes and threading toolholders. It operates at 8 threads per inch (TPI) with a 30-degree included angle, conforming to the NPT thread standard. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide in grade P25C (material grade C5) and carries a PVD-applied TiN coating for extended tool life. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.146 inches, it fits 16ER-series toolholders. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this insert for precision pipe thread production in a wide range of workpiece materials.
This insert is suited for external NPT threading operations in turning centers and manual lathes equipped with 16ER-style insert pockets. The P25C grade and universal workpiece material rating make it applicable across carbon steels, alloy steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, heat-resistant alloys, and stainless steels. It is a right-hand cutting insert, intended for conventional right-hand thread cutting passes. Typical applications include threading pipe fittings, couplings, and hydraulic components where NPT tapered thread form and sealing integrity are required.
Designed for use in 16ER-series external threading toolholders requiring a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Suitable for NPT thread cutting applications across the workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as defined by the input data.
Installation and indexing of carbide threading inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out. Use a calibrated torque wrench when seating the insert clamp screw to avoid cracking the carbide substrate. Verify toolholder pocket condition and seating surfaces before installing a new insert. Always confirm thread pitch, hand, and insert grade against the job specification before initiating a threading cycle.
