The CARMEX 16ER16ABUTP30 is a laydown-style threading insert designed for cutting external American Buttress threads at 16 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured from solid carbide in grade P30 (material grade C5), this insert delivers the rigidity and wear resistance required for consistent thread form on demanding materials. The uncoated surface makes it well suited for applications where a sharp cutting edge is the priority. With a 3/8 inch (0.375 inch) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.146 inches, it fits standard laydown insert toolholders configured for the 16 ER insert style. Licensed machinists and CNC operators use this insert for precision threading on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is intended for external right-hand American Buttress thread applications at 16 TPI. American Buttress threads are common in high-load, single-direction force applications such as hydraulic cylinders, presses, and heavy mechanical assemblies. The P30 carbide grade handles a broad range of steel and cast iron workpieces under moderate cutting conditions. It is appropriate for both production-volume threading and toolroom work where accurate thread profile and repeatability are essential.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for 16 ER style laydown threading insert seats used in external threading toolholders configured for American Buttress thread profiles at 16 TPI. Verify toolholder seat geometry and insert style designation before installation.
Threading inserts should be installed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the lathe or turning center is fully powered down and the spindle is locked before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque driver for the insert clamping screw - follow the toolholder manufacturer's specification for clamping torque, as over-tightening can fracture solid carbide. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper seating and thread accuracy.
