The CARMEX 16ER12UNMXC is a laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 12 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured from solid carbide micrograin material and finished with a PVD-applied TiN coating, this insert delivers consistent thread form and extended tool life in demanding turning applications. The 60-degree included angle conforms to the UN thread standard. With a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and 0.146 inch thickness, the 16ER12UNMXC seats securely in compatible 16ER toolholders. It is installed by CNC machinists and manual lathe operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading operations on a broad range of workpiece materials. The universal material grade designation covers steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys, making it a versatile choice for general threading work. Typical applications include producing standard UN fastener threads on turned components in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing settings.
Designed for use in standard 16ER laydown threading toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch inscribed circle insert. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and seating requirements before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine before changing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping screw to seat the insert without cracking the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating, and verify thread form with a thread gauge after the first test pass.
