The CARMEX 16ER/IL0.039BXC is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Part of the Series 16 lineup, it features a 0.039 inch cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 0.055 inches, making it well suited for precision groove profiles in cast iron and steel workpieces. The insert carries a TiN coating applied via PVD process and is manufactured to ISO standards. A positive rake angle of 15 degrees reduces cutting forces and helps maintain surface finish. Machinists and CNC operators working in production and job-shop environments install this insert when tight groove tolerances are required.
This insert is intended for use on cast iron and steel workpieces, covering primary workpiece material codes K and P. It supports both left-hand and right-hand cutting orientations, giving shops flexibility when configuring toolholders for opposing spindle directions or specific part geometries. The Series 16 designation corresponds to a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, and the insert fits toolholders with a 0.157 inch hole diameter. It is not a full-radius insert and carries a corner radius of 0.004 inches. Typical applications include grooving, undercutting, and light parting on turned components in medium to high production runs.
Designed for use in Series 16 grooving toolholders with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and a 0.157 inch mounting hole diameter, suitable for external and internal grooving applications on cast iron and steel workpieces per ISO standard toolholder specifications.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Before changing inserts, confirm the machine is in an E-stop state and the spindle is fully stopped. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 0.055 inches, and verify insert hand orientation matches the toolholder configuration before starting a cut.
