The BRUSH RESEARCH MFG. BC58400 is a flexible cylinder hone designed for surface finishing and deglazing of small-bore cylinders. Built with silicon carbide abrasive balls on flexible stems, it conforms to the bore geometry during use, producing a consistent crosshatch pattern without removing significant material. The tool runs at a maximum of 1000 RPM and accepts bores from 0.551 inches minimum up to 0.625 inches maximum diameter. It has an overall length of 8 inches with an abrasive length of 2.5 inches, making it well suited for compact work envelopes. The shank diameter is 0.190 inches for standard chuck mounting. Machinists, engine rebuilders, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this tool.
The BC58400 is used in light finishing operations on mild steel, stainless steel, and cast iron bores. Typical applications include hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic actuators, small engine cylinders, and valve bodies where a fine surface finish is needed without aggressive stock removal. The 400 grit extra fine grade is suited for final finishing passes rather than initial bore correction. It operates in a drill press, handheld drill, or lathe chuck at controlled low RPM with cutting fluid to extend abrasive life and improve finish quality.
Designed for use in bores ranging from 0.551 inches to 0.625 inches in mild steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. Suitable for any drill press, handheld drill, or lathe with a chuck capable of accepting a 0.190 inch shank.
Secure the 0.190 inch shank firmly in a drill chuck before use and verify the spindle speed does not exceed 1000 RPM. Apply a compatible cutting fluid or honing oil to the abrasive during operation to prevent overheating and to flush swarf from the bore. Use a consistent in-and-out stroke combined with rotation to develop an even crosshatch pattern. Inspect the abrasive balls before each use and replace the tool if balls are missing or the stems are bent, as uneven contact will compromise finish quality.
