The BONEHAM P404IU is a headless press fit drill bushing designed to guide drill bits and other cutting tools with precision in jig and fixture applications. Manufactured from steel, this bushing carries an inside diameter of 21/64 inches with a tight tolerance of plus 0.0001 to plus 0.0005 inches, ensuring consistent hole placement and minimal tool wander. The outside diameter measures 5/8 inches and the overall bushing length is 1/4 inches. It installs without fasteners or set screws, relying on an interference press fit for secure retention. Machinists, toolmakers, and production line personnel typically handle installation of this bushing type in production jig plates and fixture bodies.
The P404IU is suited for precision drilling operations in metalworking environments where repeatable hole location is critical. Its headless profile allows flush seating in a counterbored or straight-bored plate, keeping the working face clean and unobstructed. This makes it a practical choice for close-tolerance fixtures where a flanged or headed bushing would interfere with part loading or clamping. The P bushing industry code identifies it as a standard headless type within the common drill bushing classification system.
Designed as a standard P-series headless press fit drill bushing for use in jig plates and fixture bodies bored to accept a 5/8 inch outside diameter press fit bushing.
Press fit bushings require an arbor press or hydraulic press for proper installation - never drive them in with a hammer, as this can distort the bore or crack the plate. The receiving hole in the jig plate must be machined to the correct interference fit tolerance to achieve proper retention. Verify the bore and bushing are clean and free of burrs before pressing. Always de-energize any associated equipment and secure the workpiece before performing bushing installation or replacement.
