The BMI USA 35154 is a black malleable iron hex pipe bushing designed to reduce a larger female-threaded pipe opening to a smaller male-threaded pipe connection. Commonly called a HEXI or hex bushing due to its hex-shaped collar, this fitting transitions a 3-inch female thread down to a 1-1/4-inch male thread. The black finish indicates a standard black iron coating suited for gas piping, air, and similar non-potable fluid applications. Plumbers, pipefitters, and HVAC technicians install this bushing where inline thread-size reduction is needed without adding a separate coupling and nipple combination.
This bushing is used in residential and commercial piping systems where a pipe size reduction is required at a fitting, valve, or equipment port. Typical applications include natural gas supply lines, compressed air systems, and general-purpose black iron pipe assemblies. The malleable iron construction provides durability and resistance to cracking under mechanical stress, making it appropriate for threaded systems subject to occasional movement or vibration.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard fitting for black iron threaded pipe systems using 3-inch to 1-1/4-inch NPT connections.
Installation is performed by licensed plumbers or pipefitters following applicable local codes including IFGC requirements for gas piping systems. Shut off the gas supply or depressurize the system completely before removing or installing any threaded fittings. Apply an approved thread sealant or pipe tape rated for the intended service medium before threading the bushing into place. Use a pipe wrench on the hex collar to tighten to a proper fit without over-torquing the threads.
